Frequently Asked Questions
How does the AI translation work?
CivReady uses Claude AI, one of the most advanced language models available, to translate your military experience into civilian-friendly terminology. The AI analyzes your military resume, job descriptions, and our comprehensive database of MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) translations to create resumes that speak the language of civilian employers.
The process involves:
- Identifying military-specific terminology in your resume
- Matching your MOS to equivalent civilian job roles
- Analyzing the target job description for keywords and requirements
- Rewriting your experience to highlight transferable skills
- Optimizing formatting for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
What file formats are supported?
Upload formats: You can upload your existing military resume in PDF, DOCX (Microsoft Word), or TXT format. Our system will extract the text and preserve your work history while translating it for civilian audiences.
Download formats:
- Free Trial: PDF only
- Job Seeker Plan: PDF and DOCX
- Career Transition Plan: PDF, DOCX, and TXT
All formats are ATS-optimized to ensure your resume passes through automated screening systems used by most employers.

What is ATS and why is it important?
ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System - software used by employers to filter and manage job applications. Understanding ATS is crucial because:
- 75% of resumes never reach human eyes: Most large companies and many small businesses use ATS to automatically screen resumes before they're reviewed by hiring managers
- Keyword matching: ATS scans resumes for specific keywords from the job description. If your resume doesn't contain the right terms, it gets rejected automatically
- Format matters: Complex formatting, tables, headers/footers, and graphics can confuse ATS systems, causing them to misread or reject your resume
- Military terminology fails: Military jargon and acronyms don't match civilian job keywords, causing qualified veterans to be filtered out
Why CivReady helps:
- ATS-optimized formatting: We use clean, simple layouts that ATS systems can easily parse
- Keyword optimization: Our AI analyzes job descriptions and ensures your resume includes relevant keywords in the right context
- Civilian terminology: We translate military terms into keywords that ATS systems recognize and rank highly
- Score analysis: You can see how well your resume performs against ATS criteria (aim for 80%+ to pass most systems)
Common ATS systems include: Workday, Taleo, Greenhouse, iCIMS, Jobvite, Lever, and many others. While each has slight differences, CivReady's resumes are optimized to work across all major ATS platforms.
Pro tip: Even if a company doesn't use ATS, human recruiters also scan resumes for keywords. ATS optimization benefits you either way by making your resume clear, relevant, and keyword-rich.
